A rain garden is a depression that acts as a catch basin for excessive runoff from impervious surfaces. The depression can be a natural area where water collects or an artificial depression were excavating equipment was used. The garden is filled with native, water loving plants which have extensive root systems which are capable of absorbing large amounts of water. Many times there is a piping system present to direct water from impervious surfaces to the garden. Rain gardens benefit pollinators, decrease pollution in our streams/rivers, and help decrease flooding and erosion.
Two new rain gardens are located at Pietrek Park on the NE corner, and west side of the Kloss shelter. All of the rain water that falls on the roof of the shelter is diverted through the gutter system to the rain gardens. Fourteen species of native plants have been installed in the gardens (11 flowering species and 3 grass species). These species will be blooming at various times throughout the growing season so come to Pietrek Park and enjoy your beautiful new gardens!
Improvement plans are also under way for the lower shelter at the park, which is completely enclosed and has screened windows that open.
There remains plenty of work to be done, and we would welcome individuals or groups who are interested in volunteering their time or donating to different park projects. So come check us out, even it's for an hour, as it's your park to explore and enjoy.
